Is this board still active? Do you give friends discounts?

Is this board still active? Where is everybody? Apparently I am the first post of 2018! Just anticipating before I start my business- a few friends seem interested in guitar lessons. While I know that is a good thing at the same time I'm wondering what I should charge them and whether they are expecting a discount. Do you suggest a percentage off every lesson? I don't want to short myself but it also has to be worth it business-wise!

Re: Is this board still active? Do you give friends discounts?

I just found this forum today because I was specifically seeking out a community resource for guitar teachers. Too bad this is about the only thing I found and it's rather inactive! Maybe I can try to revive some life into it.

I'm on here more to ask questions than to give answers myself, being a pretty young teacher (I'm 27) with no pedagogical training I often wonder if I'm teaching the right way or running my business effectively, but I do have a music degree and do this semi professionally, so I guess I'm more knowledgeable than some.

I think you have to compare the rates of other teachers in your area. You may not want to charge the same price as an experienced teacher, but you don't want to go too cheap either. For example, my old teacher charged $25 for a half hour and after I graduated and came back to the area I charged $20. I think now he charges up to $40 for a 45 minute lesson, and I'm gradually raising my own rate to $25 for a half hour, with maybe some extra time allotted for the student. Personally I would just set your rate, regardless of who is taking lessons from you. Treat everyone equally.

Thanks for the advice. Good to consider rate-wise. I think you will find a lot of helpful info on this board, though I wish it was more active. Maybe it's not because just about everything has been addressed already.
