How To Get Kids To Maintain Proper Playing Position During The Lesson

Gotta tell you, getting kids to maintain proper and consistent position/technique during the lesson was almost impossible for me. Drove me absolutely crazy! No matter how many times I told them to adjust the wrist or elevate the instrument they just wouldn't. In many cases adults would not maintain correct position either no matter how many times we covered proper technique. After much frustration I finally thought of when I used to take classical lessons and then it hit me, just have them use a foot stool for the left leg which will solve most of the problems I was having with this. I went and dug up my old fold up foot stool and brought it out during a lesson and much to my gratification it forced the student into almost perfect playing position. I no longer had to spend significant amounts of lesson time dedicated to technique and position. We could actually cover some material!!! All I had was one of those cheap 15 dollar folding ones that are completely unstable that they sell to every kid who is playing a 60 dollar guitar and being forced into lessons. I found a foot stool called the O`Flaherty Guitarists Foot Stool for around 60 bux or so and this one worked really well for me. Just google it if you are interested. I don't think I'm allowed to post links here.

Anyways, I'm not trying to sell anyone anything, just sharing my experience with you.

Re: How To Get Kids To Maintain Proper Playing Position During The Lesson

I think I dealt with this without even realizing it. I haven't had much for struggles with hand positions and things aside from in the very beginning where I need to remind them a couple times. I never really put alot of thought to it by I automatically would go to "Why don't you try this footstool?" Mostly the reason was because I would see their guitars beginning to slide down their leg if they didn't have a strap. Good call!
