Teaching Students to Figure Songs Out For Themselves

I have a student who is about 13-14. He is a pretty smart guy and has decent skills, although it is sometimes a challenge to maintain his interest. He has expressed an interest in learning how to figure out songs by ear on his own. (His ear is pretty good for his age.)

I am not sure what the best way is to go about this. I originally started by trying some more traditional ear training exercises (e.g. identifying and singing back intervals) but he never really practised this and didn't seem that engaged, although he didn't seem actively turned off.

I guess one thing I could try is to play a song, preferably one that he does not know, and have him at least figure out the tonic by identifying resting points. (His ear is probably good enough to do this.) Then we could talk about common chords in that key and work out the progression, partly by trial and error, partly by picking out bass notes. When it comes to lead lines and riffs, some melodic dictation could be useful, but it's hard to keep him interested in 'abstract' theoretical or technical exercises.

What do you guys do?
