WHY USE DIFFERENT SHAPES (STUDENTS QUESTION...?)

Hi everyone,

Not been on in a while.

Just a quick question.

Ive a guy learning the CAGED system right now and he has a lot of it down...

He keeps throwing up some questions....

Todays was "Why learn the C Major scale CAGED shapes in 5/6 positions when in key of C the A Natural Minor boxes (from his point of view he has these already down) fit anyway...?

I have explained in the past that the notes must match and i.e, all chords must contain notes of A Natural Minor for it to work over the chords in a general sense....

It seems the sort of question that doesnt have a definite answer I mean its from the guitarists point of view isnt it - which to choose...?

I suggested to him well in Jazz knowing the other shapes is handy depending on fingerings etc.. if arpeggios fell somewhere else on the fretboard for example...?

Some students I find want a 100% answer an with guitar - I think there just isn't always a 100% answer for everything...

It was at the end of the lesson so we will be exploring this more next week anyway...

Anyone any thoughts....?

James

Good question from the student, and I agree with him - why use different shapes? I use the same shapes - it's the roots that are different. All the arpeggios are contained within the shapes and belong to both the major and relative minor keys. I still use the 5 shapes ala Jimmy Bruno, but we're all doing the same thing, just describing or visualising it in different ways...

The more shapes you know the better you can express yourself. Recently I have been working on a Django version of Minor Swing and his approach was so interesting and I am really getting a lot out of learning it. He moves around the fret board so easily and connects things in a way that I am not really used to doing, I tend to play in the shapes I know. So by learning his solo I am increasing my own vocabulary a lot and I know it will help me in my own improvisation down the road.

I think knowing a lot of shapes makes connections easier. So when the chord change comes you don;t have to jump somewhere - you can just play from where you are. Django was great at that. The guy was a true genius. And with only two good fingers on his left hand!

I agree with Steve, but don't see it as more shapes. I'd see the Django stuff as new connections within 'my' shapes - I'd still relate it to the five shapes, but moving through them in different ways.

Yes I have to agree its all about connecting the fretboard together.

I used the Bruno shapes for a while and then fell back into my own ways of viewing the fretboard sometimes its a box of some sort other times its a chord that.s sitting there right where I am and I can pull some tones from it - with the bigger picture being some shape in that same spot...

I think this guy has thought it through (I dont know whether he wants to save himself learning 5/6 CAGED boxes covering majors and minors i.e, bit of laziness or its just an honest question - and he has spotted the "connection" between Major and relative Minor.

I emailed the Major CAGED shapes through but I did tell him to use what he had an avoid the root....

One question was "I mean when would you use the major scale anyway...?"...(to be answered this week hopefully)....

Its great that this guy is so keen BUT he comes first thing Saturday mornings and always keeps me late for the next student/s - he could do with a longer lesson time to be honest as 30 mins is getting just too short to get into so much detail...

Anyway - good he is keen though....emoticon

Cheers for the input....

James
