Should I study music or computer science?

Hello there!

My question is, is it necessary to have a degree in music to do privat guitar teaching. Or is it better to major in computer science and builing up your musical chops with a GOOD private instructor?

So what is better to do?
I mean Iam 19 and Iam teaching 15 students and it works fine and none of them asked me "do you have a degree or not"

Thanks for answering!
Rock on !

Rockschool offer a Licentiate in Music Teaching which you can do vocationally as you work. Here's their webpage on it:

http://www.rockschool.co.uk/qualifications/diplomas/teachingdiploma/

If it's to enhance your credibility as a teacher I'd opt for that one over a "normal" degree.

Otherwise no I don't think you need a degree but your standards and skills may have to be higher to counteract people's (parents) perception, then again maybe not, I suppose it depends where a degree sits in relation to how good you are. Personally I'd chose skill and experience, partly due to how there is no ceiling on the level of those, but am still thinking of doing the Rockschool Licenciate at some point if I get the time.
