Contracts

I am self employed and I need to draw up an agreement with the shop I am going to be teaching from. Are there any particular points I should be considering to include and any that I should be looking out for?

Re: Contracts

One thing to watch out for is agreeing that you will not teach for such and such amount of time in the area where the store is located if you were to leave. If you do not live in the area of the store or plan on possibly opening shop up near there then you may be ok.

If you think there is any chance you will be teaching on your own in that area you could be in trouble. You will have to wait for the time period to go by, meanwhile getting no income,or open up shop outside of the area.

Also be careful if you sign the contract stating that you will not take students from them when you leave. This is pretty common. Just make sure when you leave you are careful not to do it. They could try to bring you to court.

Just read everything carefully and think down the road. If anything doesn't sound right or doesn't line up with your goals in the future then you may want to think about starting up on your own right off the bat. I was lucky I didn't have to sign anything where I taught at. I also live 45 minutes away from the store so I didn't have much to worry about either.
