Your website probably is indexed by google by now but your site isn't optimized or showing high enough in search results for whatever keyword you are hoping to rank for. Google crawls the net and indexes new sites, you still have to submit your site manually to Bing / Yahoo however. Google have an SEO guide, just search for "google seo guide" and download their PDF. Other areas you need to study are: Onsite optimization = Key words, avoiding duplicate content. Offsite = Links to your site from other relevant sites (a link from an online casino site will likely hurt your ranking, not that I'm saying you'd go for that). Local directories might do the job. You'd be looking to do local SEO which is easier, looking at a google search for "Guitar lessons Regina SK" I don't think you have much search engine competition if you cover the basics. You can use google keyword tool (search "keyword") to find if terms you want to rank for have enough traffic or if there are terms you see that have traffic that you'd like to rank for. Don't worry too much if there aren't many searches for "Guitar lessons Regina SK" because people in Regina may be typing just "Guitar lessons" and google gives locally relevant results. This post makes me think I really should practice my guitar more. I hope it helps. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Arpeggio789)Wed, 03 Jul 2013 23:19:17 +0000 Re: Advertising your teaching businesshttps://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p168039,from=rss#post168039https://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p168039,from=rss#post168039OK, I just found out about this: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url and submitted my URL so hopefully that will help.nondisclosed_email@example.com (diamond sea)Mon, 07 Jan 2013 21:25:17 +0000 Re: Advertising your teaching businesshttps://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p168038,from=rss#post168038https://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p168038,from=rss#post168038Two months later, my web page still doesn't show up on Google searches. Do you think it is perhaps too simple? I guess just because it is a beautiful eye-catching guitar-related image and because I've always liked the painting. I didn't really think it through: it doesn't exactly suggest hope and progress, does it? Maybe I was hoping it would suggest experience but no, you're right. Good thing I didn't print it yet. See how I need this board! What sort of image do you use? Just nice shots of guitars? Famous guitarists? The poster that caught my eye just has a really nice shot of what looks like a Gibson ES-335.nondisclosed_email@example.com (diamond sea)Sun, 11 Nov 2012 05:10:40 +0000 Re: Advertising your teaching businesshttps://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p167994,from=rss#post167994https://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p167994,from=rss#post167994quote:diamond sea wrote: So I did up this poster: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1myMwkgBHAr2IkitTrKrALd1ljwCxqGfKZ9JSbnN-dZc/edit I've added tabs with my phone number on the version I would post publicly. (I wonder if I'm just in too small of a city. When I took out a couple of ads in Montreal 10 years ago, I had plenty of students coming in.) I'm interested in talking about other strategies that work (that ideally do not cost too much). My best student, who comes two-three times a week for theory lessons, was actually referred to me by another teacher. I'm thinking of making a poster to put up at the nearby music shop. I wonder if I should actually consult a graphic designer. There is at least one huge and gorgeous professional-looking poster there that I don't know if I could compete with. (Do people hire guitar teachers based on the beauty of their posters?? Not sure.) I could make a decent-looking 8.5"x11" b&w one on Powerpoint. I've seen that someone suggested advertising through school newsletters. I've never heard of this approach before. How does it work? Do high schools put out newsletters with ads for private businesses? Perhaps they do. Would you just contact the school board? Call the principals of a couple of local schools? Setting up a website seems like a good idea. However, I do not have experience with web design and am apprehensive about paying an additional monthly fee for a website. Is there a way to do this without paying too much or with a template website? (Hm, I'm wondering if my ISP offers free web space after all. Should look into this.nondisclosed_email@example.com (diamond sea)Sat, 10 Nov 2012 18:02:40 +0000 Re: Advertising your teaching businesshttps://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p167932,from=rss#post167932https://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p167932,from=rss#post167932I'm also in my third week of advertising and am still waiting for a call for guitar lessons. (I have had two calls from other guitarists who just wanted to talk or hang out! Also, one from someone who wanted to know if I offer piano lessons.) I advertised in a local newsweekly and on two websites (kijiji and a similar site). Maybe I'll try printing out a poster and putting it up in places. I assumed that that would fail but maybe it could actually work. I've been meaning to set up a personal website too. It's something I could try.nondisclosed_email@example.com (diamond sea)Mon, 10 Sep 2012 02:30:54 +0000 Re: Advertising your teaching businesshttps://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p166471,from=rss#post166471https://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p166471,from=rss#post166471quote:WalmleyGuitar wrote: Do you have a website? Doesn't do the job any favours when people are out there charging excessively low rates. nondisclosed_email@example.com (451layla)Sun, 20 Mar 2011 23:58:16 +0000 Re: Advertising your teaching businesshttps://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p166458,from=rss#post166458https://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p166458,from=rss#post166458Do you have a website? Here in Australia you can approach local schools and get in their newsletters. I also found getting to know high school music teachers is good for doing some networking with them and in no time you'll have some students who will them recommend you to others. A4 posters printed on your computer and placed in shopping centres and in general store windows work great as well. The very best source of new students by far is your local music store- establish a close relationship with the owners..just ensure you make clear to them that your students will buy all their future gear from that same store.nondisclosed_email@example.com (clearwater1)Tue, 13 Oct 2009 13:52:52 +0000 Re: Advertising your teaching businesshttps://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p161868,from=rss#post161868https://bteachguitar.runboard.com/p161868,from=rss#post161868I was asked recently about my advertising strategy and I had to say that I ' turn off my 'phone and hide under the bed!" I know it takes time to build up a clientele, but how long should I expect to just keep on advertising? Right now I'm in 3 different local periodicals, the kinds that publish local things every 2 weeks or so. Actually I did get one contact from one, but it was someone who already knows me, and they just happened to be paging through this local penny-saver paper and saw "guitar lessons" and then the number looked familiar to them. Turns out they were thinking of guitar lessons for their son, so I guess this does count for the advertising. Anyway, how long does it take from advertising to build up a good student list? Thanks...
