beginning

Hey there I'm gonna start teaching guitar soon and I'm not sure where to begin. I mean I know theory, chords, tab, scales etc... I've just had other people tell me to start with theory or chords and I'm not sure where to start at ecspecially with a beginner. If you know of nay books or sites that will be helpful just let me know, it would sure help a lot.

If you haven't purcahsed Nick's E-Book yet, I STRONGLY advise you do so. Everything you need is there to put lessons together for teaching. It's a GREAT resource.

This is a big worry when starting out and its good that you are thinking about it now.
When I started I planned to teach all the basic theory and then start on some basic chords and scales. This was a mistake as a new student does not want to be bogged down in theory before they have even played a note.
My advise would be to get them playing right away with simple chords AM EM DM.
This will build there confidence right away and you will have them hooked.
Above all make sure your lessons are fun and enjoyable and then they will come back.

I reccomend using the first lesson to get an idea of the students level of ability. Have them play something for you , ask how they learned it. Watch for bad habits ( all downstrokes, thumb in a strange position, poor timing etc.) I start absolute beginners with labeling the guitar and explaining what everything does, basic tablature explanation, picking exercises to develop strength and coordination, sitting position ,how to hold the guitar correctly . Next week ,a few open chords(G C D ) basic strumming. Next week ,more chords, start introducing two and three chord progressions and encourage using a metronome. Next, power chords , names of notes on the 6th and 5th string up to the 12 fret. Next, bar chords (Maj., min., dominant7,min.7 ) a 6th string root and 5th string root for each chord type Next ,12 bar blues in any key! explain 1 4 5 concept. Next, minor pentatonic scale ,major pentatonic scale, hammer on pull off exercises THEN teach lots and lots of songs that the student chooses . Thats what will keep them coming back ! You can drag each of these things out over several weeks . Be confident , patient and creative and you will have a lot of fun teaching guitar ! GOOD LUCK!, Lydian Blue
