posticon What Happends when your student constantly gets stuck!!

I have been teaching now for two years, I got pushed into it by people seeing me at gigs and asking could I teach them, So I did! and it's going really well apart from the dreaded guitarists block as I call it.

This illness occurs when the excitment of your student wears off and they realise becoming Hendrix will take longer than six weeks.

Some of my students (not all) get past the basic stuff ie. chords and basic reading and get to the more subtle stuff techniques, style and basically playing a song you can recognize, they seem to get bogged down some how, it dosn't matter how hard I try to help them they just don't get it. I have tried many different ways of explaining whats required but.. banging your head against a brick wall could sum it up. I don't like just moving on to the next subject so could anyone teach me how to get past these inevitable situations.

HELP!!!!!!!

Re: What Happends when your student constantly gets stuck!!

There are two sets of problems that I find almost universal with relatively new tutors (say with less than 1000 hours of teaching):

1: They overteach - try to teach too much.
2: They teach on too steep a gradient for the student.

Either of these leads directly to the phenomena you are describing.

There are some free articles on our site which I think might help you overcome these problems.

Start by reading The Virtuous Circles of Confidence Building then, if that appeals to you, follow the link at the foot of that page, back to Articles Index and read through the rest of the articles and tips - almost all of them apply to your situation in one way or another.

Hope that helps.
