Guitar notation software
Any help would be appreciated.
I am trying to find a good software that can handle both standard notation and tab. And also be able to do somethings like make a nice rhythm chart (with chord slashs etc.) and print out a blank chord fretboard grid.
I've used powertab...not bad, but can't put rhythm slashes in the staff, also won't let me just print out standard notation. No chord grids either.
Used tab1edit....very difficult to use in terms of actually manipulating the info. etc.
Used Encore...older version, good for standard notation, but not for tab applications etc.
Anybody know of anything?
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Guitar notation software
The main industry standard for this sort of thing is Sibelius which you can get to from this link. I think this software will do everything you are asking for although I have to say I have never used it myself.
Anyone else got any ideas on this?

Re: Guitar notation software
As Nick said Sibelius 2 is the industry standard and is by far the best. I use it all the time. At first it can be a bit tricky to use but it doesn't take long to get past that. The major benifit is that you can manipulate every aspect of the score and you can also save sections of your work as graphic files and then insert it into other programmes like powerpoint or word.
The only problem it costs about £600 (in the UK, i don't know about elsewhere) but if your a student you can get it for £300. There are others which are cheaper but in my opinion not as good but might serve your purposes just as well- finale 2003 or finale guitar. Sibelius does everything from vocal lines to orchestral scores which you may or may not need in which case finale is the best of the rest.
Hope that helps.

Re: Guitar notation software
Sibelius also makes a notation program geared towards guitarists...I can't remember the exact name, but it might be cheaper than Sibelius. I downloaded the demo at one point, but it didn't seem to do anything that Sibelius couldn't do, so I didn't bother using the demo. And yes sibelius is expensive, but it is probably the best notation software right now. In U.S. dollars it runs something like $500 , or $250 for students. Of course you can just go to sibelius.com and check for yourself.

Re: Guitar notation software
Thanks for the advice.
I found a demo of something called MusEdit...which so far seems to be the ticket and is giving me everything I want. GuitarPro seemed to be Ok as well, but this MusEdit seems to be easy enough to manipulate etc.
I've been into this stuff because, although I have good penmanship, I think it adds a little bit more of a polish to hand out professional looking examples and exercises to students. Just a thought.

Re: Guitar notation software
The software made by Sibelius is called "Sibelius G7" and it's around $120. It got a very good review in the current issue of Guitar Player (Jan '04).

Re: Guitar notation software
Hi,
I just bought Sibelius G7 one week ago, and I've been learning how to use it. All that I can say is that this is one of the best notation programs I've every seen! It's a must have for guitar teachers if you like to write out your own exercises and songs.
The user interface has a guitar neck that you can use to point and click your notes onto the page, as well as the tabulature.
It also has an assortment of ways to create bends, vibrato, and other things into your notation that most of the other programs that I've tried don't do very well.
It also creates a midi output of your finished score and a utility for posting it on the WEB so that people can click on it to hear the midi playback.
It's a great program. My only gripe is that it can be a little tricky to learn how to input bends and grace notes without crashing the program. But after you get the feel for it, you can put together a song or lead sheet fairly quickly.
