Re: songs

One that I just taught and is very easy to play is 45 by Shinedown. A cool sounding song that most in beginning students can handle.

3 Doors Down - Kryptonite is working very well at the moment for introducing power chords as it's just the same 3 chords with the 1 shape - B(m) G A - on the low E. If the students are advanced enough they can have a go at the solo (which isn't that difficult, really)

And it's in Guitar Hero 5, which is a bonus.

Re: songs

Iv started using 'The Climb' by Miley Cyrus for some of the younger students, to help them change basic chords.

The song seems to go down a treat, I teach a group of girls and Iv never heard them so quiet!

Hi again,

Ive a few girs into Miley Cyrus - just wondering do you change the key for it? I think it uses barre chords if a tab I was looking at is right?. C#m and stuff - I didnt get a chance to chekc it properly though - s that mightened be right?

Obviously for the beginners barres are out - I was gonna change the key for it maybe? I'm doing another one of hers as well - cant remember the name of it off the top of my head.

James

Here is the link for the one I use.

I use it without the capo, its a bit low, but its really just to inspire the kids to prcatice changing chords. Is a good introduction to Bm as well. I just taught them the simple Bm on bottom 4 strings.

Id be interested in hearing what Miley song you use, might give me another lesson! lol

Re: songs

Hi Dean,

The song was Naturally and also an old Hanna Montant one - Who Said. I mentioned it to a girl today thinking she wouldnt know it but she does - its G C D etc.. I think. She even agreed to work on it which got me out of a hole! LOL

The other one (Naturally) is a sort of descending bass line G G/F# etc C C/B that sort of thing.

Didnt seem too difficult in the video anyway - though I havent got a good look at it. Hope these are helpful!

Thanks for that link.....

James

Have a student who's been working on descending bass lines. He's also recently discovered maj7 chords. I stumbled on "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer which uses both. Also included a sus4 chord, two new strum patterns, and it made for a great lesson and a good challenge for him. Here's the what I used:

Pure Imagination

I started teaching this one after a student wanted to learn it. Very easy to play and even young students can handle it with some modifications.

Even rockers enjoy playing with this one.

Strange guy Buckethead but one heck of a guitar player.

Re: songs

A couple of good tunes this week.

Firstly, The Pretender by Foo Fighters - lots of fun and a challenge for intermediate students to nail the whole tune with the backing track.

Second, The Cult: an oldie that is great for beginners. Easy powerchord tune and again, fun to play for younger kids

Also been teaching loads of Queen as I'm doing the We Will Rock You musical with the local academy next month, so 'I Want it All', One Vision, Hammer to Fall, Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Little Thing, and 'Don't Stop me Now' are all being taught at the moment!
