Get a foot in at a school?
Thats how I tried it...my five year plan was executed brilliantly. Getting in at a school one of the best ways.
I started work at a private school as a technician, the school employs over 40 peri staff to teach pretty much every instrument under the sun (we even have a uke ensemble). It was days not weeks before I started sniffing around the music department, they had a classical tutor but not electric so they let me do a little bit of work in a lunch break. This went from a few students to 30 in a few years and has now become my full time job. Another guy who is a science technician has gone along exactly the same route and become a bass tutor full time.
The opportunities you have around you too...access to study, materials, resources. If you have to have a part time job I'd recommend working in a school to anyone. Even the receptionist did 10 hours peri work on Tenor Sax!

Re: Get a foot in at a school?
This is looking more likely for me. I recently got my enhanced CRB disclosure.
Think is, I don't have any qualifications on the guitar. I don't even have my grade 1! However I do have a list of references from ex-students, teachers and professional musicians.
I'm working on getting the grades through the RGT books but I'm concerned that not having a degree will hold me back. Has this been a problem for anyone?

Re: Get a foot in at a school?
There is about 30 instrumental tutors in our school, probably half of them have a degree, half do not but earn the same amount of money and get the same inspriation and enjoyement from the job.
There are other shorter qualifications that schools rate such as the CT ABRSM ?
